What is a brand?
A brand is the perception that people hold about you, your startup or your business. In simple terms it is what people or someone will associate about you, your startup and your business.
As you can see having a brand is not tied to businesses and companies, you as a person also need a brand. You already have a brand (as we have said, the perception people have about you) whether you like it or not people are already associating you with something (can you think of something ??) you see !!.
In my opinion I prefer being in charge of what I am being perceived of and so should you.
Remember whether you are intentional or not someone out there is already associating you, your startup or your business with something.
What is brand identity?
Before I tell you what brand identity is, let me tell you what branding is: branding is an intentional pairing of relevant things done consistently and that is what makes up a brand.Brand identity is tangible and appeals to the senses. You can see it, touch it, hold it, hear it, watch it move.
It fuels recognition, amplifies differentiation and makes big ideas and meaning accessible. Brand identity takes disparate elements and unifies them into whole systems.
Are the dots connecting? A brand is a perception, branding is the process of managing and shaping that perception and finally a brand identity refers to the elements designed to express the brand, think of logos, typography, colors etc.
We often judge books by their covers, whether it's fair or not.
And that's why the perceived value of a service or product is usually greater than the actual one.
The same brand identity which makes up a visual identity seen time and time again builds trust, and trust keeps customers coming back for more.
When you close your eyes and think of KFC, what do you see? For the products and services that have a strong brand identity, it's the identity that people often think of first, rather than the product itself.
Think of Apple, Spotify, Netflix. Chances are that without even showing you the logos, you'd have a fairly good picture of how they look.
Reasons why you, your startup or business needs a brand identity.
Why do you need to invest in a brand identity? Because the best identity programs embody and advance the startup's or business brand by supporting desired perceptions.Identity expresses itself in every touchpoint of the brand and becomes intrinsic to a company's culture, a constant symbol of its core values and its heritage.
A strong brand identity does more than look good it builds recognition, drives awareness, earns trust, fosters loyalty, and keeps your messaging consistent across every touchpoint.
a) Recognizable and differentiated image
Compelling brand identity presents any business, any size, anywhere with an immediately recognizable image that positions it for success. An identity helps manage the perception of a company and differentiates it from its competitors as we had seen. A smart system conveys respect for the customer and makes it easy to understand features and benefits. A new product design or a better environment can delight a customer and create loyalty. An effective identity encompasses such elements as a name that is easy to remember or a distinctive package design for a product.b) Brand awareness and understanding
Strategic brand identity works across diverse audiences and cultures to build an awareness and understanding of a business and its strengths.By making intelligence visible, effective identity seeks to communicate a company's unique value proposition.
The coherence of communications across various media sends a strong signal to the customer about the laser like focus of a company.
c) Building Trust and Credibility
Trust and credibility as we know are vital elements for any business, they hold even more significance for startups. As a new business or startup, establishing trust and credibility is essential for potential clients to take a leap of faith and choose your startup over established competitors.
Effective branding helps convey professionalism, reliability and expertise, all of which contribute to building trust in the minds of consumers.
By building a brand identity startups and businesses can instill confidence and gain that much-needed credibility in the eyes of the target audience.
d) Foster Customer Loyalty
For startups and business, cultivating customer loyalty is both a strategic and financial imperative.Branding plays a critical role in this endeavor by creating a strong emotional connection with consumers.
Building a community around your brand is a powerful strategy that can have a significant impact on fostering customer loyalty and generating word of mouth referrals.
By creating an engaged and loyal community of customers, you not only establish a sense of belonging but also nurture a deeper connection between your brand and its supporters. This community becomes a platform for your customers to interact, share experiences and advocate for your brand, amplifying positive word of mouth referrals.
A well-designed brand personality that aligns with the values, aspirations and needs of the target audience helps startups build trust and establish rapport.
When customers resonate with a startup's brand personality , they are more likely to become loyal advocates and repeat customers.
By consistently delivering on the promises and expectations associated with the brand, startups can foster long-term customer loyalty and increase their customer lifetime value and referrals.
e) Consistent messaging
In an information saturated world, capturing the attention of customers has become increasingly challenging. This is where the consistency in branding becomes invaluable, from visual elements to brand messaging, consistency helps create a familiar and memorable brand identity.
When customers encounter a consistent brand experience across various touchpoints, it becomes easier for them to recall and recognize the brand.
As a result, fewer hits are required to make a lasting impression, ultimately optimizing a startup's lean marketing budget.
The ability to create positive associations and foster emotional connections can transform startups into brands that people love, trust and advocate for.
Additionally, a strong brand identity is more than simply having a story or a visual identity.
Eventually it becomes an asset to your business, startup or yourself, influencing buying decisions and the perceived value of your products or services.
Internally if the business or startup has employees, a strong brand identity can also give employees a sense of purpose and connection to the workplace, and in turn, improves engagement and productivity.
